Week 6 of 2026: Train Dreams

  • This entry comes a tad late because I was offline for a week almost. Things I can share off the top of my head are
  • My playlist of January 2026 is here.
  • I traveled by train, back and forth it was almost a full day. Using the train in Chile has its own mystique, it is something people used to do back in the days and now the transportation is done mostly using buses, while planes are getting cheaper than ever for long distances. However there's lots of nostalgia and romanticism around trains here in Chile and given the long shape of this country, trains do make a lot of sense.
  • I heard "Tren al Sur" from Los Prisioneros lots of times during the travel from other people's phones doing reels.
  • I drove a car for more than a thousand kilometers around the Llaima volcano, and I feel more confident driving than ever. I also feel more adult, which probably means something but I really don't think it is important.
  • I also made a playlist with random alternative music to drive. I spent about two hours picking songs from my liked songs in spotify, and here it is.
  • I managed to run on the road around the Conguillio natural park and it was stressing because of guardian dogs and large trucks but it felt rewarding in the end because of the landscape.
  • I don't usually take pictures, but I carry a monocular with me. Some animals and plants I observed were
  • I observed a Carpinterito, a Male and a Female carpinteros
  • I observed a Pitio, and some Cachañas
  • I observed an Alacrán (a tiny scorpion) at the place we were staying. It was chilling in the middle of the cabin and by luck I did not step on it.
  • I learned about Lleuque, a tree I had never seen before.
  • I met the oldest araucaria in the world, almost 1800 years old
  • I walked through the reviving forest of the China Muerta reservation, which was devastated by a fire around 15 years ago I think. It features small araucarias growing at its own rhythm, and in this season, fields of Amancay flowers were crowning the hills, which was a beautiful thing to see.
  • I remembered the episode about bird watching from "How To" with John Wilson, one of my favorite shows ever. Sometimes you won't see a thing and you can still enjoy yourself from just being there.
  • I watched the Frankenstein film and I found it plain and boring. On the other hand I watched train dreams while on the train and I think it may be one of my favorite films in the past years. I want to get the book.
  • I also learned that Nick Cave did the last song of the film and that he lost two children in the past 10-11 years and I had no idea.
